A non-governmental organization known as Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Siaya County administration in a deal that will see the community members benefit from a raft of livelihood improvement programmes including education support.

SHOFCO is a grassroots movement that has been pivotal in enhancing large scale transformation in urban slums by providing community advocacy, education and leadership development for women and the girl child.

Speaking in Siaya town during the launch of a community centre presided over by the area Governor James Orengo, SHOFCO CEO Kennedy Odede outlined that the organisation will seek a formal working relationship with the county government of Siaya as it has done with more than 35 counties in the country on areas of bringing meaningful change to the community through the provision of critical services such as education, health, counselling and food distribution to the underprivileged.

“I’m very glad that the County Government of Siaya has agreed to partner with us in the mission to help our communities tackle the challenges posed by the pressures of increasing urbanization. With the MoU in place, we will strive to give dignity and hope to our vulnerable members of the society by affording them an opportunity to thrive economically while we also empower children through education,” Odede affirmed.

Governor Orengo assured the organisation of the political goodwill and promised to accord them the necessary assistance as they roll out their transformative agenda for the communities in the county.

“I’m glad that with the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed soon, Siaya County will also be among the more than 30 counties already benefitting from the rich livelihood enhancement programmes by SHOFCO. We will endeavor to do our bit and provide them a conducive atmosphere to help improve our communities in all corners of Siaya,” assured Orengo.

SHOFCO also offers training on technical courses, community development, information technology among other disciplines.
