Muslim leaders in Homa Bay County have called on the community to invest in education by supporting students who have qualified to join universities and colleges but are struggling to raise the funds needed to begin their studies.
SUPKEM County Secretary Nuhu Abdul Masoud said higher education remains out of reach for many bright students because of financial hardship.
Speaking during an education support initiative forum in Homa Bay Town, Masoud said the programme seeks to mobilise support from members of the Muslim community and other well-wishers to ensure deserving students do not miss opportunities to pursue higher education.
“We have taken it as our responsibility to look for ways of helping these students. Many have qualified to join universities, but some lack school fees, suitcases and other basic requirements. We are appealing to anyone willing to support them through financial contributions or donations of learning materials,” Masoud said.
Masoud said the programme had already acquired different types of suitcases for students preparing to join various campuses.
“We have many different types of suitcases that we want to give to students who are joining various campuses,” he said.
He announced that a fundraising event will be held on July 31, 2026, at Governors Park in Homa Bay Town to raise resources for the initiative.
Masoud also urged students to remain focused on their studies and avoid political violence.
“Education is the key to a better future. Students should work hard, remain disciplined and concentrate on achieving their academic goals,” he said.
Students warned against political exploitation
Teacher Zenu Lawidin said education remains one of the best investments young people can make and warned them against allowing politicians to exploit them.
“If you allow yourself to be misused, you risk destroying your future. Students should protect their integrity and remain focused on their education,” Lawidin said.
Muslim elder Ismael Loo echoed the call, saying education empowers individuals and creates opportunities for economic advancement.
“Education opens people’s eyes and prepares them for a better tomorrow. Every student should take the opportunity seriously because it will shape their future,” Loo said.

The leaders expressed confidence that through community support, more students would successfully enrol in universities and colleges and contribute to social and economic development.
