The Eastern Regional Organising Secretary, who is also Makueni County Organising Secretary, Peter Mwinzi, said history has been made as both senior and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) emerged champions in the 62nd Eastern Regional KSEF competitions, topping seven competing counties with highly innovative projects.
Last year, Makueni was ranked in position two, and the previous year it was in position three. This year, the county led in both senior and junior categories, with officials promising to work hard to retain the position.
“The projects presented currently at all levels are very high-tech. In the past, during the science congress era, even making shoe polish could get you to nationals, but that was then. Without technology, coding, and artificial intelligence, it is hard for a project to move past the sub-county level,” said Mwinzi.
He added that, just as the President has stated that the country is moving towards Singapore-level development, the innovations from learners show that this vision is achievable in the coming years.
Grade 9 and 10 learners presented very strong projects based on Competency-Based Education (CBE), demonstrating full adoption of the curriculum.
“I am very sure this country is moving forward in the right development direction through science fairs if we continue embracing CBE. I tell you, in the next few years, Kenya will be making and manufacturing its own products based on technology,” Mwinzi said.

Mwinzi noted that the projects showcased innovation, research, and practical solutions developed by junior school learners. Evaluation was based on originality, relevance, potential impact, and scientific methodology.
Makueni Boys excels
In the senior category, schools proceeding to nationals include Makueni Boys with six projects, Precious Blood Kilungu with three, and Kisau Girls with two projects. St. Mary’s ACK Ukia Girls, Mukaa Boys, Mwaani Girls, Kalulini Boys, and Salama Senior School will each present one project.
