Chief Principal Irungu Nduati has officially ended his six-year tenure at The Highway Senior School after being transferred to Katani Mixed Secondary School in Machakos County.
Nduati leaves behind a legacy marked by notable academic improvement, sporting success, talent development and increased national and international recognition. His tenure saw Highway emerge as one of the country’s prominent institutions in sports and co-curricular activities, while also recording significant growth in student enrolment and improvements in academic performance.
The school’s sporting breakthrough came in 2022 when Highway finished runners-up in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) football championship before securing another silver medal at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games. The performance earned the school an opportunity to represent the region at the World School Games in Morocco.
Highway reached another milestone in 2024 when it won the KSSSA national football title, with Humphrey Aroko named the best player in Kenya during the championship. The same year, Highway won the Europe Cup and earned a place at the international competition in Romania, while its tennis team also emerged as the best in East Africa. Over the past five years, the school has featured at the FEASSA Games three times in football and five times in tennis and table tennis, demonstrating the breadth of its co-curricular development.

In 2025, Highway was crowned the best school nationally in drama and sent four teams to the FEASSA Games, where it secured silver in handball. The institution also won the French play competition for the third consecutive year. The school’s progress continued in 2026, with all its activities advancing to the national level. Highway also produced the best tennis player in Kenya and East Africa, while one of its footballers earned selection to Kenya’s Under-15 national team, and another athlete is set to represent the country at the Youth Olympics.
Reflecting on his six years at the institution, Nduati attributed the achievements to God and the collective efforts of teachers, coaches, students, partners and friends who supported the school throughout his tenure. “I leave Highway with my head held high, seeing what God has helped me achieve. For my students, you are the reason we do this. Please don’t let me down. Go on and live your best lives,” Nduati said. He also acknowledged several individuals who contributed to the school’s progress, including Beldine Odemba, Gerard Wambua, Abuga, Kate Cromuel Sakari, Gilly Abenga, Lilian Ilaini, Dongsey Avedi, Daphne Yeku, Jackline Juma, Timothy Sande and Stephen Ocholla Ochieng, among others.

Nduati’s posting to Highway was not his intended destination six years ago; however, his tenure has since been defined by achievements that significantly raised the school’s profile in academics, sports and the arts. As he departs for Katani Mixed Secondary School in Machakos County, Highway Senior School will seek to build on the foundation laid during his tenure and sustain its growing reputation across the country’s education and co-curricular landscape.
