Hassan set to take over as TSC Field Services Director

The Kiambu County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director, Abubakar Hassan is set to be appointed the head of Field Services at the Commission’s Secretariat.

He will be taking over from Mary Rotich, a long-serving Secretariat staff who retired early this year. Everlyne Mitei has since been acting on the position since the departure of the former.

Efforts by Education News to reach Hassan to confirm or deny the impending appointment were not successful as he was said to be in Saudi Arabia attending Pilgrimage in Mecca.

The man, who is a trained human resource professional, has served as County Director in various Counties among them Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi and now Kiambu. He is also known to be a smooth operator who quickly gets into rapport with his immediate bosses.

He is known to be a close ally of current CEO, Nancy Macharia and was also believed to have had the ear of his former TSC chief, Gabriel Lengoiboni.

The expected appointment of Hassan follows a similar pattern in recent times where TSC taps into talents of field offices to fill arising senior vacancies at the headquarters. A case in point is the transfer of Western Regional Director, Lilian Wachira to head Staffing in an acting capacity.

It has also emerged that the Commission is deploying senior officers from the head office to the field as was seen in the transfer of Joseph Mugelle to replace Ms Wachira in Western. Others from the head office were transferred to counties as directors and deputy directors.

The Commission had advertised for the vacancy of Director of Field Services and several TSC staff are believed to have applied and were interviewed. But the advertisement was later cancelled in mysterious circumstances.

Those who had attended the interview were still waiting for directions on the matter.

The Director of Field Services is charged with the responsibility of handling and responding to queries and issues from the field officers; preparing and presenting proposals to the Commission on matters affecting discipline for direction and guidance.
