A sombre mood has engulfed Ulu village in Makueni County after a Grade 5 pupil drowned in Musikitini dam while swimming with friends on Saturday.
The incident occurred in Kiima Kiu/Kalanzoni ward, leaving residents in shock as the young learner’s life was cut short during what began as a playful afternoon.
According to Disaster and Fire Management Officer James Kimweli, members of the community retrieved the body and handed it over to police for further action.

The tragedy has reignited calls for vigilance during the rainy season, when dams, rivers, and stagnant water pose heightened risks to children. Local leaders have repeatedly urged parents to take extreme care of their children, warning against the dangers of playing in or near water bodies.
Parents and guardians have being reminded to educate their children on the risks and to keep close watch during school holidays.
