Govt to release Loans for varsity, TVET students on Tuesday next week

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.

The Government through the Ministry of Education will start releasing funds for first year students in Universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions starting from Tuesday next week.

In a statement released today November 3, 2023, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu stated that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has finalised the processing of loans for First Year students in universities and TVETs under the New Higher Education Funding Model.

“The Ministry wishes to inform successful applicants that the funds will be disbursed to their respective universities and student accounts starting Tuesday November 7, 2023. Students are advised to ensure that their bank details, as provided in the application for the loans, are correct and up to date,” said Machogu in the statement.

Yesterday Machakos University students took to the street to protest the delayed HELB loan and engaged the police in the better part of the day in running battles just a month after Multimedia University students protested over the same.

In photos and videos circulating on social media, the students lit bonfires along the road, paralyzing traffic.

Reportedly, a total of 269,112 students were placed by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to Universities and TVET institutions and were eligible for government funding.
