Friends School Mbale closed indefinitely after students riot over LaLiga final

Vihiga’s Friends School shut down indefinitely after student riot over LaLiga matches

Friends School Mbale in Vihiga County has been closed indefinitely following a student riot yesterday. The unrest is reportedly ignited by the administration’s decision to prevent students from watching the season’s final La Liga football matches.

Reports indicate that the students went on a rampage, causing substantial damage to school property: images circulating online show vandalised offices, broken windows, and scattered books. The Deputy Principal’s office was notably targeted during the chaos.

Several students are reported to have sustained injuries. However, the extent of the damage and injuries has not been fully disclosed. The school’s administration has not provided an official statement regarding the incident or the indefinite decision to close the school.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about student welfare, the balance between academic commitments and extracurricular interests, and the importance of providing outlets for student engagement.

Stakeholders call for a thorough investigation and implementation of preventative measures to avoid future incidents.
