The Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) has sued four universities for failing to remit Sh52 million union dues deducted from members.

The universities are Jomo Kenyatta University of Agricultureand Technology (JKUAT), University of Nairobi (UoN), Moi University and Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

JKUAT is holding Sh 11 million, UoN Sh 10 million, Moi University six million shilling for the period January –April 2018.  TUK has failed to remit Sh25 million for the past four years.

According to Uasu lawyer Titus Koceyo, failure to remit the money to the Barclays Bank account as gazette by former Cabinet Secretary for labour Kazungu Kambi, is considered a breach of Section 10 of the Labor Relations Act 2007.

It requires all dues to be remitted within 10 days. Koceyo also said Uasu had sought the courts’ intervention because they had flouted reminders from respondents.

Flouting this rule has greatly hampered the activities of the union.
