Former MP to fully sponsor top 2023 KCSE candidate in Embu

Former Nandi Hills MP, Hon. Alfred Keter.

A family in Kega village, Runyenjes sub-county, is in celebration after former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter offered a full sponsorship to their 18-year-old son Eric Macharia Nyaga who scored Grade A of 84 points in the 2023 KCSE exams.

Tears of joy filled the air when the former legislator called Moses Nyaga, the father, to inform them that he would fully sponsor their boy’s university education.

While speaking to Education News, Nyaga welcomed Keter’s gesture, confessing that he was at a loss on how his son would join the university.

”I’m a very happy man today and I have been praying and thanking God for this miracle. It has been a difficult journey supporting my son since primary school, being just a small farmer,” he said.

He added that he has another son currently in Form 2 in one of the day secondary schools in the area, whom he said he will give his all to ensure he completes his secondary education.

Macharia’s mother, Ann Wawira who sells vegetables in Kianjokoma market, could not hide her joy after receiving the news, stressing that they would not have made it to send their son to university.

“Keter is God-sent and we are now certain that our son will be able to pursue his dreams. We are indeed thankful,” she said.

Macharia said that he was happy his efforts had paid off and thanked Keter for the scholarship and the support to enable him to chase his dream of joining the University of Nairobi to pursue a programme in the Medicine field.

”I have received so many calls from friends, teachers and other people congratulating me for my KCSE exam performance. The call from Alfred Keter made my day, speaking to a person of such stature must only be God’s deed,” said a joyful Macharia.

“I want to become a Neurosurgeon and help as many people as possible. That has always been my dream since when I was in primary school,” he added.

Macharia’s stellar performance is said to have made history in his village as such a Grade has never been realized by any student in the area.

Moi High School Mbiruri Principal Patrick Nderitu lauded the former MP for the good deed, saying that Macharia is a clear testament that any student can perform well regardless of the primary school they study in.

When Macharia sat his KCPE exams in 2019 and emerged as the top student after scoring 414 marks, he feared that he would not join secondary school due to the financial challenges facing his family.

He secured a chance to Moi High School Mbiruri but the struggle to get a sponsorship had just begun.

His parents had no stable income to support his secondary education and they continued knocking on doors of different organizations to find a sponsor to support his education.

Macharia’s first attempt was Wings to Fly but unfortunately, he missed the chance, sending him back to the drawing board to seek alternatives.

He tried as many entities as possible but heavens opened a week to the admission date when Cooperative Bank came to his aid and provided a full scholarship to study at his school of choice.

Determined to impress his Sponsor, Macharia topped his class in the first exam, eliciting interest from teachers who saw his potential to excel in his studies.
