Form 2 student kills self after being caned by guardians

Residents of Riribe village were shocked after a form two student reportedly committed suicide after being caned by guardians.

According to Kenyenya Location chief, Mr Henry Kiboi, the boy committed suicide in the house at night.

Trouble started when the boy reported at his home for the mid-term break and reportedly stole his mother’s cellphone and sold it. That was when the embittered mother reported the matter to his brothers-in-law to assist her correct the boy because the father stays in Nairobi where he works.

The caning by uncles left the boy humiliated and he reportedly vowed to teach the uncles unknown bitter lesson.

After supper, the lad reportedly retired to sleep at his hut but he woke up in the middle of the night and hanged himself.

When family members woke up in the morning, they found the body suspended from the ceiling. They reported the matter to the area chief who then alerted the police.

Kenyenya Subcounty police Commander, Mr Philip Oyugi, gave the boy’s name as Isaac Onyancha aged   16 years of age.The body was removed to Kisii Teaching and Refferal Hospital Mortuary for autopsy as investigations into the incident were launched. Untill his death, the deceased was a form two student at Kenyenya Secondary School.

The School Principal, Mr Lawrence Makori and his teachers, said that death had dealt the school a big blow.The death struck in barely five months after the school lost a teacher through natural causes.

Following the student’s death, Kenyenya Subcounty Commisioner, Mr.Davis Mpevi, advised parents to be careful when they were dealing with their adolescent children. He said  adolescents faced a lot of development problems that lead them into many temptations that ruined their lives.
