Five students from St. Francis Kimuron, Mokwo girls, Koindabilet, and St. Alphonsus Mutei secondary schools, Elgeyo Marakwet, have excelled in athletics, representing the county at the recent Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) event in Rwanda, held in August.

The Deputy Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet Prof. Grace Cheserek, upon their return, called on the Ministry of Education, to sponsor a teacher or coach to accompany students to such international competitions.

Prof. Cheserek further emphasized the importance of providing emotional support to students in foreign lands to ensure optimal performance.

Additionally, she urged stakeholders with training camps to nurture young talents during school breaks, as many talented students lack opportunities to train outside school.

The Deputy Governor also encouraged companies to support youthful athletes through sponsorships, providing mutual benefits.

She also advised parents to recognize and support their children’s talents as potential sources of income.

Prof. Cheserek further expressed confidence that the students would follow in the footsteps of their successful peers in international races by securing gold medals for the nation.

He further highlighted that the region has initiated athletics clubs in several schools to continue producing exceptional athletes.

“Schools from host nations Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, DR Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Zanzibar will gather in the country to compete in various sporting disciplines namely football, swimming, athletics, hockey, netball, rugby, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton and lawn tennis,” he said.

Speaking to Education News, the Principal of St. Francis Kimuron Boniface Kinusia said that they are elated that they managed to send a good number of students as a county calling upon the Ministry of Education to support the program.
