Five schools closed over Al Shabaab raids to reopen

Five schools closed three years ago in Basuba Ward, Lamu East at the height of al Shabaab attacks are set to reopen.
Five primary schools which border Boni Forest in Basuba, Milimani, Mangai, Mararani and Kiangwe have remained closed since 2014 as Al-Shabaab militants intensified attacks that saw many teachers flee the region for fear of their lives.
This follows a directive by Lamu County commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo who ordered the immediate reopening of the said schools in terror ridden Basuba ward.
Kitiyo said security has been intensified across the region and that he saw no reason as to why the schools should remain shut.
The county commissioner urged parents to take their children back to school and warned that action will be taken against any parent who fails to heed the directive.
