Three people, including a father and his son, have died after drowning inside a septic tank at Makindu Boys High School in Makueni County.
The victims were reportedly contracted to drain the school’s septic tank when the tragic incident occurred on Thursday. Preliminary reports indicate that the men lost consciousness due to oxygen depletion inside the confined space before drowning.
Emergency response teams from the Makueni County Disaster Management Unit and the Kenya Red Cross were dispatched to the scene to conduct a recovery operation.

Witnesses described emotional scenes at the school as anxious crowds gathered to watch the recovery mission unfold.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident amid growing concerns over occupational safety standards in confined work environments.
Investigators are seeking to establish whether the workers had been provided with protective equipment and whether mandatory safety procedures were observed before they entered the septic tank.
