Tension gripped Kangaru Boys High School in Embu County in the early hours of Monday, October 13, 2025, after students erupt into a protest over the alleged assault of a Form Four student by a teacher.

The chaos is said to have begun shortly after midnight, when students, angered by reports that one of their colleagues had been beaten and injured, took to the school compound chanting slogans and demanding justice. Stones were hurled, windows shattered with the situation spiraling out of control.

Attempts by teachers and school guards to calm the enraged students were met with resistance forcing them to call for police backup. However, even the arrival of police failed to contain the fury, as some students broke through the gates while others jumped over the fence to escape the compound.

Residents of Embu town were startled by the unusual sight of students wandering the streets in the darkness, some barefoot and carrying personal belongings in small bags. Others were seen stranded near bus parks and roadside shops, unsure of where to go as the night wore on.

Police officers were forced to patrol the town throughout the night to ensure order and protect property. Embu West Sub-County Police Commander, Vincent Kitili, confirmed the incident, saying the students had reported the matter themselves at Embu Police Station before being rounded up for safety.

“The students themselves reported the incident at Embu Police Station. We immediately swung into action, traced those who had left the school, and brought them together at Moi Stadium, where they were kept under security till morning. This was to ensure their safety before facilitating their travel home,” said Kitili.

He added that investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault that triggered the unrest. “We are probing the incident to determine exactly what transpired and whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of the teacher,” he stated.

By dawn, learning at the institution had come to a standstill. The school compound remained tense, with broken windows and scattered debris testifying to the night of chaos.

Journalists who tried to access the school were blocked at the main gate by security guards, who claimed they were acting on orders from the administration. Several attempts to reach the school principal for comment were unsuccessful, as he neither answered calls nor responded to text messages.
