Elgeyo Marakwet launches coaches training programme to revive sports in schools

Elgeyo Marakwet County is set to revolutionize sports development with the launch of coaches training programme dubbed ‘House of Coaches’, aimed at nurturing world-class athletes from the school level.

The initiative, announced by the County government, will focus on training professional teacher-coaches to identify and develop talented young athletes.

Speaking to school principals during the launch of the program, Governor Wisely Rotich said the program will train 975 teacher-coaches across the county, and is set to kick off in October.

He said each primary school, Junior Secondary School (JSS), and secondary school will have one coach trained under the initiative adding that the coaches will be equipped with the necessary skills to identify and develop talented athletes.

“The County government has already trained 12 coaches who will act as “Trainers of Trainees” in collaboration with the Mayor of Miramas town in France. These trainers will play a crucial role in cascading the training to other coaches across the county,” said the governor.

He added that the program will also involve identifying talented athletes through athletic championships at the ward and county levels. The best athletes will be enrolled in a holiday training program designed to enhance their talents.

“The County government aims to restore Elgeyo Marakwet’s reputation as a global giant in athletics through this initiative by tapping talents in school level. By investing in sports development and providing opportunities for young athletes, the County is poised to produce world-class athletes who will make the region proud.” He said

The ‘House of Coaches’ program is a significant step towards promoting sports development in Elgeyo Marakwet County, and its success is expected to have a lasting impact on the region’s athletic landscape
