Elgeyo Marakwet administration acts to protect learners, closes bars near schools in Kapsowar

Elgeyo Marakwet administration suspends Kapsowar bars near schools over noise, security, and licensing breaches.

Several alcoholic businesses have been suspended in Kapsowar Town for failing to meet approval guidelines.

Kapyoswo, Kalyet, and East Inn bars in the same Township have been suspended for failing the guideline test.

According to David Kandie, the Elgeyo Marakwet County government director in charge of Alcoholic Drinks Control, only Arawa Bar, Smartlife Sacco Bar, Oasis Bar and Restaurant, and Talic Supermarket Wines and Spirits were allowed to operate.

The decision was made on Tuesday, 22nd July 2025, after the Marakwet West Sub-County Alcoholic Drinks Control Regulation Committee received resolutions from the County Alcoholic Drinks Administrative Review Committee.

All the outlets had been closed sometime in April following the conclusion of the inspection and approval by the Sub-County Committee, said Kandie.

Aggrieved by the decision, Kandie said the operators sought redress with the county Appeals committee to have their issues discussed and a resolution given.

The director revealed the reasons behind the closed establishments. For example, Kapyoswo was closed due to a security breach after a man was stabbed there, whereas Kalyet didn’t apply because it was very close to Kapsowar Girls’ School.

East Inn also posed a nuisance in the form of excessive noise, which spilt over to the Girls’ school, said Kandie.

A Petition from Kapcherop Town ( bars along Kamoi exit road) was, however, quashed for security reasons and their involvement in illicit alcoholic drinks, besides being flagged as notorious chang’aa dens.

Present were Marakwet West Sub-County Assistant County Commissioner, ACC Anthony Jibanza, alongside sub-county public health and Revenue officials.
