Egerton University has hailed the global recognition of one of its lecturers after Dr. Tabitha Awuor Amollo was named among five recipients of the prestigious OWSD–Elsevier Foundation Award.
The award recognises outstanding early-career women scientists whose research contributes to solving critical global challenges while advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Amollo earned the honour for her groundbreaking research in solar energy conversion and thin-film technology, as well as her efforts to translate laboratory findings into practical community applications.
Community-Focused Innovations
Among her notable innovations are solar-powered refrigeration systems designed to improve the storage of medicines and vaccines in rural healthcare facilities.
Her work has demonstrated how scientific research can be applied to address real-world challenges, particularly in underserved communities.
University Celebrates Achievement
Speaking after the announcement, Egerton University Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage described the recognition as a major milestone for both the institution and the country.
“Beyond her impressive research output, Dr. Amollo has been actively engaged in mentorship and capacity building, supporting women and students in STEM and helping nurture the next generation of scientists,” he said.
Prof. Kibwage noted that her leadership in establishing and guiding a photovoltaics research laboratory had strengthened research capacity in the region.
Commitment Beyond Research
The OWSD–Elsevier Foundation Award also highlights scientists who have overcome significant challenges in their pursuit of research excellence.
In a statement, the foundation said this year’s awardees had harnessed their expertise to advance access to sustainable energy.
“Their achievements go beyond the laboratory, and each has demonstrated remarkable dedication to mentorship, inclusion and supporting their communities,” the statement said.
