Egerton University has issued a formal clarification distancing itself from a political message that briefly appeared on its official Facebook page on Sunday, May 10, 2026, which appeared to endorse former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as a preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
The university clarified that the post was unauthorized and does not represent its official position, stressing that it remains strictly neutral on all political matters as a public institution.
In its statement, the institution emphasized that its core mandate remains teaching, learning, research, and community engagement and not involvement in political campaigning or endorsement of any candidate.
“As a public institution, Egerton University remains strictly neutral. Our mission is centered on teaching, learning, research and extension—not political campaigning,” the statement read.

The university further apologized to stakeholders and the public for any confusion caused by the brief appearance of the unauthorized post, noting that corrective measures have already been taken to prevent a recurrence.
The statement was issued by Prof. Nzula Kitaka, Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization at Egerton University, who reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to integrity, professionalism and responsible communication.
The incident has sparked discussion online, with education stakeholders calling for stronger oversight of official institutional communication channels to avoid similar situations in the future.
