Shock and sorrow gripped Kilgoris town on Saturday morning after residents learned of the death of former Kilgoris MP Gideon Sitelu Konchella.

Konchella died on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 4 am while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa confirmed that the former legislator had been unwell since November 2025 and was admitted in May 2026 after contracting an infection.

His body was moved to Lee Funeral Home.

Community Mourns Veteran Leader

The news caught many residents by surprise, including members of the Kilgoris branch university students’ association led by Shadrack Ole Santi, who described Konchella as a father figure to the community.

Current Kilgoris MP Julius Ole Sunkuli announced the death and paid tribute to the former lawmaker.

“He served Kilgoris for 20 years, but the cruel hand of death has taken his life. May God rest him in eternal peace,” said Sunkuli.

Leaders Send Condolences

President William Ruto called Konchella’s family to convey his condolences.

Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu and Woman Representative Rebecca Tonkei also sent messages of sympathy to the family and the people of Kilgoris.

Konchella, a retired army colonel, first won the Kilgoris parliamentary seat in 2002 under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) party after defeating incumbent Julius Sunkuli.

He went on to serve the constituency for two decades and remained one of the most influential political figures in Narok County.

In 2022, he contested the Narok Senate seat and finished third behind Senator Ledama Ole Kina and former Governor Samuel Ole Tunai.

Champion of Education and Peace

Konchella will be remembered for championing the education of the girl child and for his efforts in fostering peace along the Kisii–Trans Mara border.

Together with the late Bomachoge Borabu MP Joel Onyancha, he played a key role in promoting peaceful coexistence between communities in the region.

Leaders described him as a veteran legislator whose influence shaped politics and development in Kilgoris Constituency and Narok County over two decades of public service.

His death marks the end of a long political career dedicated to community development, education and peacebuilding.
