Dr. James Mwangi appointed Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya

Equity Bank boss, Dr. James Mwangi has been named the inaugural chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

The former Vice Chancellor of Meru University was appointed by President William Ruto on Thursday when he launched and awarded charter to the Open University of Kenya.

Dr. Mwangi will take lead of the first virtual university in the country as from Thursday August 3, 2023.

The certified accountant in his acceptance speech thanked the President for the opportunity and vowed to make a mark in his new job.

“I would like to thank you Dr. Ruto for giving me the opportunity to serve as the first chancellor of this new university.

I’m humbled that you have given me a responsibility to provide this service for this country on your behalf which I humbly accept,

“You have bestowed on me the trust to perform the function of a chancellor just when my service as the chancellor of Meru University has just ended having served from 2013 to 2023.

I can assure you that I will bring the insights that I’ve learnt to this new university.” He said.

The Konza Based institution will have a total of eight programmes, and thereafter expand to offer a continuum of bachelors, masters and doctorial programmes all will be purely online.

The programmes includes; Bachelor of Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor of Data

Science, Bachelor of Technology Education, Bachelor of Science in Business and Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Economics and Statistics, and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Food Systems.

The postgraduate programmes are Leadership and Accountability, and Learning Design and Technology.
