Kisii County Education Board Chairman Prof Henry Onderi has cautioned politicians against involving students in their political rallies.

Speaking to Education News in his Kisii office, Prof Onderi said that his team had discovered that most students attended rallies instead of attending classes.

‘We don’t hate politicians. We hate their activities which are interfering with the education of our children,’ he said.

The chairman pointed out that most of the rallies are held near schools and are mounted with heavy public address systems and music which attract learners.

He asked education cabinet secretary Prof George Magoha and interior cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to intervene and arrest those who contravene the law on children’s rights.

He said that most of the affected are standard eight and form four candidates in rural day schools.

‘Most of these young people are welcomed by the masters of the ceremonies to present items in the guise of talent promotion,’ he said.

He added that students from Kisii University, Nyamache KMTC and Kisii National Polytechnic are also affected.

Prof Onderi, who is also a lecturer at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), asked learners to balance activities in their lives in order to achieve success.
