Keep children away from political rallies, Wavinya urges parents

Parents in Machakos County have been asked to warn their school children against attending political rallies.

Speaking at Mlolongo in Mavoko sub county, gubernatorial aspirant Wavinya Ndeti expressed concern over the large number of children, now at home on holiday, attending political rallies.

She said it is not advisable as they are young and yet to understand politics, adding these rallies could also turn chaotic, with the real danger of children getting hurt.

“Parents, please look after your children at home and ensure they don’t attend political rallies because they should not be there and may get hurt. Those are unsafe spaces for them and we should be careful, don’t take them or allow them to go there,” said Wavinya, a former Cabinet Administrative Secretary.

She asked parents to keep their children busy at home and know their whereabouts all the time.

A spot check by Education News established that children – especially those in high school – were attending political rallies and lining up to get handouts.

Some of the politicians chase them away while others give them money urging them to do something constructive with the cash.
