As schools are set to open on Monday, parents from some schools in Kisii County fear for their children who might not get good accommodation as some infrastructure have been destroyed.

Speaking to Education News they said that classroom roof tops were blown off while pit latrines pose danger to students and teachers.

They appealed to the Ministry of Education to repair the damaged facilities before Monday.

This comes after President William Ruto said that KSh1 billion had been released to the MoE to cater for all damaged infrastructure in the schools.

According to Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir, there are more than 80 classrooms and pit latrines destroyed to different degrees but they will not hinder schools from opening.

“We have received reports some schools lost classrooms completely and intend to mix pupils of different grades in one room to learn but we have assured them the problem will be alleviated before schools open,” he said.

The director appealed to head teachers and their Board of Management in the schools to report any incident related to infrastructure damage to his office as early as possible to enable early renovation.

He advised schools administrators to report to him any room or building that might show any signs of cracking for repair in time.

Also, he advised parents to provide their children with warm clothes during this ongoing heavy rain to cushion them from cold.
