St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys National School has landed experienced rugby coach and teacher Eliud Okwemba in a move aimed at strengthening its rugby programme and positioning the institution among the leading school rugby teams in the country.
Okwemba, popularly regarded as a rugby guru, joins Kibabii Boys from Friends School Bokoli, where he spent one year and guided the institution to a historic milestone in 2026. Under his stewardship, Bokoli Boys’ rugby sevens team qualified for the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSA) championships for the first time in the school’s history, a breakthrough that added to his coaching résumé and reinforced his reputation as a tactician capable of building competitive school rugby teams.
Before moving to Bokoli, Okwemba enjoyed a highly successful spell at Koyonzo Boys, where he served as head coach between 2017 and 2025. During his tenure, Koyonzo Boys recorded one East Africa title, two national championships, four national appearances, four Western Region titles and four Kakamega County crowns, a decorated record that has cemented his standing as one of the coaches associated with sustained success in school rugby in Western Kenya.

Speaking after reporting to his new station, Okwemba said he was ready to embrace the challenge at Kibabii Boys. “We want to transform Kibabii rugby to school status and we are ready for the challenge,” he said. He also thanked Kibabii Boys Chief Principal Mr Murunga for the warm reception, signalling his readiness to work closely with the school administration and players. He has since wished Friends School Bokoli well following his departure, expressing gratitude to the administration, fellow teachers and players for the opportunity to serve at the institution.
Okwemba’s appointment is expected to inject fresh technical expertise into Kibabii Boys’ sporting programme, with his experience spanning player development, tactical preparation and competition at county, regional, national and East African levels.

Kibabii Boys will now look to him to identify and nurture talent, strengthen the team’s technical structures and develop a competitive side capable of challenging established rugby powerhouses, as attention shifts to the pitch where the coach will be expected to translate his decorated record into results for his new school.
