Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has lauded teachers’ unions for complementing the government’s efforts to improve education, saying their role in advancing teachers’ welfare remains critical to the delivery of quality learning across the country.
Speaking on Saturday during a thanksgiving ceremony for Peter Rono, who was recently re-elected as Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet Branch Treasurer, Murkomen said the government’s education reforms can only succeed through strong collaboration with teachers and their representative unions.
The event was held in Kembu, Bomet East Sub-county, and brought together education stakeholders, union officials and political leaders.
Murkomen said teachers occupy a central place in shaping Kenya’s future and challenged them to continue serving with professionalism, integrity and dedication.
“By advancing the welfare of teachers and promoting education reforms, our teachers’ unions complement our government’s agenda of providing quality education to all our learners,” Murkomen said.
He reminded teachers that the future of the country depends largely on the quality of education they provide to learners.
“The future of our country is dependent on the quality of the learning they impart to our learners, and I call upon them to continue doing their work with professionalism and utmost diligence,” he added.
Recognition for union leadership
The thanksgiving ceremony celebrated Peter Rono’s re-election as KNUT Bomet Branch Treasurer during the union elections held in March.
Murkomen congratulated the union official on earning another term of office and encouraged education leaders to continue working together in promoting teachers’ welfare and strengthening the education sector.
The event attracted several national and county leaders, including Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr Eng. Festus Ng’eno, Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei, Bomet Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir and MPs Richard Yegon.
Former MPs Wilson Sossion and Bernard Bett, Members of County Assembly and other leaders also attended the ceremony.
Among the teachers’ union leaders present were KNUT First National Vice-Chairperson Malel Lang’at, Second National Vice-Chairperson Aggrey Murumba Namisi and KUPPET Bomet Branch Executive Secretary Paul Kimetto, alongside other senior union officials.
Murkomen said continued collaboration between the government, teachers and their unions remains essential in implementing education reforms and improving learning outcomes across the country.
