Overcrowding of students’ dormitories in boarding schools has been blamed for the rising cases of tuberculosis (TB) in Siaya County.
According to the County TB and Leprosy Co-ordinator, Madam Mary Juma Wambura, 49 schools within the county have students suffering from TB with some schools having more than five students suffering from the disease.
Speaking at Ruma center in Rarieda Sub County during the celebration of World TB Day, Wambura said a recent survey conducted in the affected boarding schools by the county health team in partnership with the education department revealed that the affected schools had overcrowded dormitories which were fitted with triple decker beds.
