SECTION A: Comprehension – 20 MARKS – General approach
KCSE English Paper 2 Comprehension is not a set book; it is an unseen passage taken from contemporary life. For this reason, the candidate should be prepared in all-round ways like reading newspapers, magazines, even school magazines for those schools that already have them and general awareness of the surroundings and current affairs.
A candidate who reads Daily Nation, The Standard, The Star, school magazines, listens to news and observes what is happening in the village and town will have the vocabulary and background knowledge to understand the passage quickly. Reading widely also teaches you how writers use irony, rhetorical questions and sarcasm, which are always tested.
After that general preparation, here is what is expected in the examination room:
- Direct and Inference Questions (8 marks): Do not copy the passage word for word. Underline where the answer is, then rewrite in your own words. For inference like “What does the writer imply?” you must read between the lines.
- Summary in Note Form (4 marks): Write in point form, not paragraph. Number your points. Do not write full sentences. If instruction says 4 points, write 4. Writing in paragraph form earns zero even if content is correct.
- Meaning of Words As Used (3 marks): Give contextual meaning, not dictionary meaning. Example: “something small” in the 2024 excerpt did not mean small size; it meant a bribe.
- Literary Devices and Writer’s Style (5 marks): Identify device, quote example from passage, explain effect.

SECTION B: Compulsory set text – Fathers Of Nations – 25 MARKS
In 2024 KCSE, the excerpt was: Ms McKenzie’s taxi driver in Nigeria – a university graduate working as a taxi driver because the job market failed him, and guards demanding “something small” as a bribe.
How to answer the 25 marks:
- a) Immediate Context (4 marks): Tell what happened BEFORE and AFTER. Before, Ms McKenzie arrived in Nigeria to interview Dr Afolabi at the University of Ibadan. The guards stopped the driver, demanding a bribe. After, the driver explains corruption in Nigeria and drives her to Afolabi’s office.
- b) Character Traits (4-6 marks): Identify trait + illustrate with quote + explanation. The driver is educated but underemployed and frustrated, bold and outspoken, temperamental.
- c) Themes / Issues (4 marks): Corruption, graduate unemployment, failed economy, impunity.
- d) Stylistic Devices (6 marks): Identify – Quote – Effect. Dialogue, Sarcasm and Irony, Humour, Vivid description, Rhetorical questions.
- e) Question From Elsewhere (4 marks): Example: What is the intention of Way Omega? Answer: To recolonise Africa economically and ideologically disguised as aid. You must read the whole novel.
- f) Grammar in Context (1-2 marks): Watch tense change.
Four Main Concerns to Master:
- Poor Leadership – Bangoura, Tossy, Bibo.
- Corruption – public funds disappearing.
- Neo-colonialism – Way Omega Foundation.
- Tribalism and Disunity.
SECTION C: Poetry and oral literature – 20 MARKS
Unseen Poem (15 marks): Read three times. Identify speaker, subject, mood, tone, themes, devices with quotes and effects.
Oral Narrative (5 marks): Features: Opening formula, dialogue, song, moral lesson, trickster, personification, repetition.
SECTION D: Grammar – 15 MARKS
Practice: Direct/indirect speech, active/passive, rewriting using If, Unless, Although, Despite, phrasal verbs, idioms, word formation, punctuation and prepositions.
