Cheptais Boys High School from Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County, has qualified for the regional handball championships after battling through tough conditions to finish second in the county competition.

The team earned its spot after facing St. Luke’s Boys at Friends School Kamusinga, eventually settling for runners-up behind St. Luke’s Kimilili. Cheptais Boys scored 13 goals against their opponents’ 24, a result that nonetheless guaranteed them a place in the regional stage.

Team captain Samuel Obomba expressed pride in the achievement, noting that adverse weather had hampered their performance. “We’re happy because we are now regional handball qualifiers. We really tried, but the heavy downpour made the ball slippery and difficult to control,” he said.

Games teacher Mr. Brian Kusang praised the players’ discipline and resilience, attributing their success to teamwork and the support of fans who accompanied them. He observed that the squad has shown remarkable improvement compared to last year, when they only reached the semifinals and failed to progress further.

Kusang further pledged to work closely with the coach to address weaknesses identified during the county games. He said the technical bench is determined to refine strategies and ensure the team is better prepared to compete at the regional level.
