The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has rolled out a programme to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning targeting schools in Mt Elgon Sub-County, Bungoma County.
The initiative aims to equip both teachers and learners with hands-on skills in STEM subjects, a move expected to improve academic performance while inspiring students to pursue careers in science-related fields.
At Kapsokwony DEB Primary and Junior Secondary School, Deputy Head Teacher Richard Simotwo said about 125 Grade nine students benefited from the programme, gaining hands-on experience using laboratory equipment in biology, chemistry, physics, technology and mathematics.
Simotwo noted that the outreach initiative has helped to demystify science subjects among learners by exposing them to practical experiments that enhance their understanding of classroom concepts.

CEMASTEA Coordinator for Special programmes in Student Learning Joseph Kuria said the outreach programme is designed to reach schools that are unable to visit the institution’s main training centre in Nairobi.
According to Kuria, the programme involves transporting science equipment and experimental materials directly to schools, enabling learners to engage in experiments that make STEM subjects more interactive, engaging and easier to grasp.
The programme also supports teachers’ professional development by strengthening their pedagogical skills and improving classroom delivery in STEM disciplines, a move education stakeholders say is critical in nurturing innovation and scientific curiosity among learners.
