Kakamega Catholic Diocese Bishop Joseph Obanyi has urged the national government to link the Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ease employment challenges in the sector.

Speaking during the annual Thanksgiving mass for ECDE teachers at Mukumu Parish, Bishop said that the tutors have been neglected by the government and their welfare are rarely met amid the wave of Competency Based Education (CBE) roll out.

“As the clergy, we are playing our part to speak on their behalf and represent their demands and welfare to the Counties.” Bishop affirmed

He noted that the Ministry of Education and County governments should work together to have ECDE teacher have a conducive and good salary as a motivating factor in their work.

The cleric also called for peace and mutual coexistence in schools, noting that arguments arising between the head teachers and the ECDE heads occasionally disrupt learning.

He called for the review the Education Act and the new curriculum to align with need of the tutors, noting that foundational education starts in the ECDE department which has to be prioritized.

Obanyi also raised concerns on the inadequate toilets in the ECDE centres, posing a major challenge that has led to poor sanitation exposing learners to diseases.
