Rongo University has laid off 137 lecturers and non-teaching staff as the institution begins restructuring in line with the government’s directive to ensure sustainability of higher learning institutions.
The varsity Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Samuel Gudu in a statement announced that the move came as a result of reduced capitation from the national government and harsh economic environment that has driven the university into a financial crunch; and they were looking to enhance the institution’s long-term sustainability.
He noted that those affected were alerted through letters issued on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
Rongo’s restructuring comes amid guidelines set for universities to countercheck operations so as to ensure the long-term sustainability of the institutions.
At the same time, he said the reduction in the number of self-sponsored students since 2016 has seen finances dwindle.
Those laid off will be financially compensated to cushion them amid hard economic times.
