The County Government of Busia has launched the construction of 78 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classrooms across its seven sub-counties under the ECDE Phase II Programme for the 2025/2026 financial year.
The initiative, being implemented by the Department of Education and Industrial Skills Development and supervised by the Department of Public Works, forms part of a Rapid Results Initiative aimed at improving learning infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for early childhood education throughout the county.
Construction works are being undertaken through a Community-Based Contracting model, with Project Management Committees (PMCs) overseeing activities at the project sites. The approach is intended to enhance community participation, strengthen local ownership of development projects, and promote efficient utilization of resources.
According to the county government, all classrooms are being constructed using standardized designs developed by the Department of Public Works. Clerks of Works have been deployed to provide technical supervision and ensure that all projects meet the required quality and safety standards.
Beyond improving access to quality early childhood education, the programme is expected to create employment opportunities for local residents and stimulate economic activity within communities through the use of locally sourced labour and construction materials.
The county administration says the investment underscores its commitment to strengthening foundational learning and expanding access to quality education infrastructure for young learners across Busia County.
