Bungoma D.E.B grade five pupil to represent Africa at world chess championship

Bungoma D.E.B. Primary School is celebrating a historic milestone after one of its pupils, Mirriam Paraan, earned a place at the World Cadets Chess Championship in Kazakhstan.

Paraan, a Grade Five pupil, will fly out on Wednesday to Almaty, where the global tournament is scheduled to run from September 18 to October 1.

The 11-year-old prodigy is the reigning Kenya Under-11 Chess Champion. In April, she represented the country at the Africa Under-11 Chess Championship, where she struck gold, securing her qualification to the world stage.

School head teacher Tobias Khisa described her as a shining example of determination and talent. “Mirriam has brought honor not only to Bungoma D.E.B. but to Bungoma County and the nation at large. We are proud of her achievements and confident she will make Africa proud in Kazakhstan,” Khisa said.

Bungoma D.E.B., the largest comprehensive school in Bungoma County, has consistently ranked among Kenya’s top-performing institutions under Khisa’s leadership. The administration says Paraan’s success underscores the school’s commitment to nurturing excellence both in academics and extracurricular activities.

As the countdown to the world championship begins, Paraan carries with her the hopes of her school, county, and country, as well as the weight of representing the African continent on chess’s biggest youth stage.
