Borabu NG-CDF to give Sh10,000 to students joining Mecheo Senior Secondary

  • Borabu NG-CDF has announced a Sh10,000 incentive for every new student joining Mecheo Senior Secondary School to boost enrolment.
  • MP Patrick Osero has revealed that the constituency has already invested in infrastructure, including classrooms, electricity and a borehole, despite low enrolment of only 40 students.
  • The MP has pledged additional bursaries and a modern laboratory, urging parents, teachers and leaders to work together to revive the school.

All new students who join Mecheo Senior Secondary School will each receive Sh10,000 from the Borabu NG-CDF office to boost education and enrolment.

Speaking at the school on Tuesday, Borabu MP Patrick Osero said it was sad to see parents withdrawing their children from the institution because of minor challenges like lack of water, a problem his office has now fixed. “Running away with your children from the school you built with your own effort instead of coming together and finding solutions with us leaders does not sound well,” he said.

The MP said NG-CDF has invested heavily in Mecheo Senior Secondary School, providing modern infrastructure including classrooms, an administration block, a good playing field, electricity connection and water supply through a borehole, but the school has only 40 students in the whole institution, which he described as a waste of resources.

Osero instructed the Principal and staff to find ways of attracting more students to increase enrolment and fully utilise the available facilities. He announced that, starting this term, every new Form One student who joins the school will automatically get Sh10,000 from the Borabu Constituency NG-CDF kitty to cater for school fees and uniform, as a motivation to parents.

The MP stressed the importance of teachers, parents, learners and leaders working as a team to revive the school. “If teachers, parents and learners work as one team, this school will grow to be like other big schools in Borabu. But if we pull in different directions, we will kill our own school,” Osero said.

He called on parents to return their children to the local school instead of taking them to schools further away, saying day schools save money and allow parents to monitor their children closely and curb indiscipline.

The MP also promised to add more NG-CDF bursaries for needy students at the school and to construct a modern laboratory and equip it to improve science performance.

Parents who attended the meeting welcomed the Sh10,000 offer and pledged to mobilise more students to join the school.

A show-cause notice gives an employee an opportunity to respond to concerns raised by the employer before any further administrative or disciplinary action is considered. Education professionals are therefore advised to carefully read the notice and ensure their response addresses the specific issues raised. The first step is to understand the allegations or concerns outlined in the letter. Employees should avoid responding to issues that were not raised or leaving out important matters that directly relate to the query. A professional response should begin by acknowledging receipt of the show-cause letter and confirming that the employee understands the matter being raised. The employee should then provide a clear and truthful account of what happened. Relevant facts, dates and circumstances should be included where necessary, while unnecessary explanations, emotional language and personal attacks should be avoided. Where an employee made an error or failed to meet an expected requirement, acknowledging the mistake can demonstrate responsibility and professionalism. For instance, an employee may state: “I acknowledge that this was an oversight on my part, and I sincerely regret it.” However, accepting responsibility should not prevent an employee from providing a factual explanation or correcting any inaccuracies contained in the allegations. Where the employee disputes an allegation, the response should clearly state the facts and, where available, refer to supporting documents or evidence. The response should also indicate the steps the employee intends to take to prevent a recurrence. For example, a teacher who has been questioned over incomplete lesson records may state that they will ensure all required records are completed and submitted within the stipulated timelines. Employees should maintain a respectful tone throughout the response, even where they believe the show-cause notice is unfair or based on inaccurate information. Insults, threats, sarcasm and emotional language can undermine an otherwise valid explanation. A simple professional structure can include the subject “Response to Show Cause”, an acknowledgement of the notice, an explanation of the circumstances, clarification of disputed facts where necessary, corrective measures and a respectful conclusion. The response should be dated, signed and submitted within the deadline provided by the employer. Employees should also retain a copy of the response and any supporting documents submitted. For teachers and school staff, a show-cause response is therefore more than an opportunity to defend oneself. It is also an official employment record that should accurately present the employee's account of the matter. The guiding principle is simple: read the notice carefully, understand the concern, explain the facts, accept responsibility where appropriate, provide evidence where necessary and remain professional throughout.
