Bomet University Secretary General Obala Francis has emerged as a prominent figure in student leadership, with his sights now set on a bigger political role after completing his university studies.
Obala is a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Public Relations at Bomet University. He hails from Matayos Constituency in Busia County and is the fifth-born in the Otondo family.
His journey in student leadership has been characterised by persistence after an initial electoral setback.
In his second year, Obala contested for the Secretary General position but lost the election. He returned to the race the following year, again seeking the same position, and this time secured victory.
Since taking office, he has become an active voice for students, with his leadership centred on raising issues affecting the university community and representing students’ interests before the administration.
Political ambitions beyond university
His experience in student leadership has also shaped his political ambitions beyond the university. Obala has expressed interest in joining national politics and says he plans to seek election as a Member of Parliament in the 2027 General Election.
His aspiration marks a transition from campus politics to the national political arena, where he hopes to use the experience gained in representing students as a foundation for his political career.
For Obala, the journey from losing his first leadership contest to eventually becoming Secretary General has been one of persistence, giving him an opportunity to build his leadership profile while still pursuing his studies.
