Outgoing Principal Secretary for Basic Education Prof. Julius Bitok has officially handed over the leadership of the State Department for Basic Education to his successor John Lekakeny Ololtuaa following a presidential re-assignment.
In his farewell remarks, Prof. Bitok described his tenure as an honour and privilege, noting that he had worked closely with education stakeholders dedicated to transforming Kenya’s education sector.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve in this role and work alongside dedicated stakeholders committed to transforming education in our country,” he said.
Prof. Bitok confirmed that he will now assume a new role at the State Department for Tourism, expressing gratitude to colleagues and education stakeholders for their support during his time in the education docket.
As he exits the Ministry, he extended his best wishes to his successor.
“I wish PS Ololtuaa every success as he takes over the mantle,” he added.

PS Ololtuaa assumes office at a time when the education sector continues to implement key reforms aimed at strengthening learning outcomes and stabilizing curriculum delivery across the country.
His appointment also comes amid concerns over rising cases of school unrest, which have affected 204 schools nationwide. Of particular concern is the recent Utumishi Girls Academy fire tragedy that claimed the lives of 16 students, while several others sustained injuries.
In response, the government has intensified efforts to curb school fires and unrest, rolling out reforms aimed at enhancing learner safety and safeguarding school property.
