The Brookside Secondary schools Term one National games officially got underway at Shanzu Teachers Training College and Shimo la Tewa, in Mombasa County, as the opening ceremony is expected to kick off the matches.
With more than 2000 students drawn from eight regions across the country, is expected to battle for the top honors in various disciplines over the next five days.
The event will include basketball, handball, hockey, rugby 15s, swimming, athletics, and cross country.
Apart from the highly coveted national champions, the top three teams in each discipline will earn qualification for the East Africa Secondary Schools Games scheduled for August in Eldoret.

Big names and tittle holders like; Dr Aggrey High School (Basketball), Butere Girls Secondary (Basketball Girls), All Saints Embu High School (rugby 15s), Moi Girls Kamusinga (handball), Kimilili Boys (handball) Tigoi Girls and Musing’u Boys (All hockey) will be looking forward to defend their tittles.
Rugby 15s, handball, and basketball will take place at Shimo La Tewa as Shanzu TTC hosts athletics, hockey, and select handball fixtures. Swimming events will be held at the Aga Khan Academy.
Various schools’ coaches have expressed their confidence in their teams to emerge winners, Butere Girls Coach Sylvester Dindi remained positive as they plan to face the Rift Valley champions, St Joseph, in the opening.
“We are not in Mombasa for pleasure but rather to make sure we go back home with the girls’ basketball title that we have retained for the last two years,” he said.
St Joseph’s coach Arnold Sitati is also ascertain of his team’s determination to retain the title.
“Consistent training is the key thing and the girls are determined to go for the trophy at the national. Last year we never made it to the finals, and we have been working hard because we started preparations early enough, he stated.
Other teams in pool B include Mpesa Academy from the Central region and Asumbi Girls from the Nyanza region. Pool A features Ikutha Girls from the Eastern region, Former champion Kaya Tiwi Secondary from the Coast, Olympic Girls from Nairobi, and a team from the North Eastern region.

In the boys’ basketball matches, defending champions Dr Aggery High School to face Nairobi champions, Dagoretti High School in a thrilling Pool A. Other matches in the pool see Kamusinga High from Western take on Pioneer School from central.
