Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) has strongly oppose any move by Teachers Service Commission TSC to downward review the promotion list to the disadvantage of teachers working in Hardship and Arid Areas.

According to KETHAWA National Secretary, Wangonya Wangenye, in total, the commission intends to remove 1864 teachers in the promotion list they released last month in 9 counties which are Samburu Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Lamu, Isiolo, Tana River, Turkana, and Marsabit and distribute to other counties that are not Hardship and Arid.

Wangenye reiterated that as an association this will not be acceptable at all, adding that the commission should look for more funds to bridge the gap of disparity.

“We have been fighting for affirmative action on promotion of teachers in hardship and arid areas and what the commission has given to us is just a drop in the ocean which we shall jealously protect even as we agitate for more in order to achieve what is rightfully ours,” Wangenye said.

The Association National Secretary confirmed that they are ready for a bruising battle with Teachers Service Commission be it legal or otherwise if the commission dare execute this inhuman decision.

“Teachers in hardship and Arid areas have been discriminated for decades and what’s genuinely theirs no one can take away under our watch,” he said

He affirmed that the association shall remain vigilant than even before, saying  this is an affront to their constitutional right.
