Agoro Sare and Ng’iya Girls High schools are the new champions of basketball in the just concluded Nyanza secondary school Term One games held in Kisumu High School.
In the nail biting epic duels, Agoro Sare of Homa Bay brushed off stiff opposition from Maseno High School to win 54-40.
The Paul Odock-charges weathered the sun scorched match to book a berth in the nationals to be staged in Machakos in two weeks.
“We have been conducting consistent and rigorous training for these matches. We are proud that we have defeated a tough side,’’ Odock said.
They have vowed not to lower their guard as they focus on bagging the national trophy and represent Kenya in the East African games.
In the other pulsating final, Ng’iya Girls from Siaya County overcame Nyakach Girls (Kisumu) 44-41. In the semis, they had walloped Asumbi Girls 37-19.
Ng’iya under the tutelage of Naftali Ambala have been building a new crop of players as they were hard-hit by Covid-19.
“The margin is a clear testimony that Nyakach were no joke. We assure our supporters in Nyanza that we shall not disappoint them in Machakos,’’Ambala said.
Some of the winners in other competitions are Ringa Boys High School (Homa Bay) in hockey, who defeated Kisumu Day on penalties, and Ulanda Girls and Manyatta Boys in handball, both from Migori.
In swimming, Asumbi Girls proved their mettle by earning 59 points followed closely by Chemelil (58) and Kisumu Girls (55).
In the boys category, Kisumu School swam away with 89 points, Jalaram Academy (79) and Kisumu Academy settled for third place with 64.
Kisii County dominated both the boys and girls cross country by taking home 14 and 18 points respectively. Second place went to their neighbours Nyamira County and Migori wrapped up on third place.
Kisii also won the overall ranking in athletics with 146 points followed by Nyamira.
