KICD to roll out digital programme for teachers

Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) is set to roll out a digital training programme for teachers in a move to boost virtual teaching and learning.

The strategy aims at equipping teachers with skills for developing and delivering quality digital content. The programme was triggered by the emergence of the Covid-19 which saw schools shut early this year. The TSC, Microsoft and Safaricom have partnered to bring the programme on board.

In the partnership, Safaricom has offered to give teachers and learners free data bundles. However, towards service delivery, KICD has refurbished its Educational Broadcasting Studio, Edu TV channel which is the only education broadcasting TV station in Kenya.

The channel aims at enhancing and expanding virtual learning that has become a new reality as schools remain closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The teachers training delivered online will be free  and selected groups will be on pilot basis, before being rolled out across the country,’’ said KICD Deputy Director Dr Joel Mabonga.

The new Edu TV studio is designed to accommodate all learning levels from lower classes.  The background is multidimensional, interactive and designed to capture the imagination and ensure retention of the learners.

When schools closed in March, The Ministry of Education directed KICD to expand its remote learning programs which included broadcasting, and developing digital content, to serve more than 15 million learners.

“Edu TV sustains a varied educational menu that has enabled it bag award for airing local content in KUZA Awards organized by Communications Authority of Kenya,” said Dr. Mabonga.
