Maasai Mara University Vice-Chancellor together with her two deputies, driver and finance officer have denied fraud charges related to misappropriation of Sh.177 million.
While appearing before Nakuru Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Usui, the suspects denied the charges ranging from conspiracy to commit corruption offences, wilful failure to comply with the law relating to management of public funds, abuse of office and false accounting.
University VC Mary Walingo, her deputies Simon Kasaine and John Almadi Obare, Finance Officer Anaclet Biket Okumu and Noor Abdi the VCs driver pleaded not guilty via video link at Nakuru Police Station where they were being held.
As per the charges, the five between January 24th and July 19th allegedly conspired to siphon public funds amounting to Sh. 177 million.
The suspects were later released on a Sh. 20b million each with surety of similar amount.
However, the court dismissed the application to stop them from stepping into the institution citing that there was no evidence of attempted interference with witnesses.
The case will be mentioned on 11th September 2020.
