Teachers Service Commission has left thousands of teachers gnashing their teeth in peerless anguish after denying them promotion and pay rise citing their membership to the Kenya Union of Teachers (Knut).
Their counterparts who left the union led by the vocal Sossion are enjoying fatter cheques this month.
Approximately 47,131 thousand teachers in job group B5 have been exalted to C1 as per the TSC Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) whereas 32,556 inclined to Sossion’s union missed the precious chance of promotion.
It is this discrimination that has escalated a rift and rife between TSC and Knut with teachers at the center of the battle between two giants.
Contrary to the previous statement, TSC was to promote about 100,000 teachers in job group B5 who were previously P1 teachers. The teachers promoted are either members of Kuppet or do not belong to any union hence the souring relationship between Knut and TSC.
The promotions and salary increment comes after a collective bargaining agreement that was signed by the two unions and the employer three years ago.
The promoted teachers who have been earning basic salary of Sh21,756 and Sh27,195 have this month bag Sh27,195 and Sh33,994 respectively.
Secondary school teachers who are members of Kuppet and hold administrative positions have received enhanced salaries but their counterparts who belong to Sossion-led union are left licking their wounds.
Responding to the act, Knut secretary general, Wilson Sossion accused TSC for managing the docket with nonpareil discrimination and blackmail. However, he called for strict adherence to the code of regulations of the TSC act and CBA.
Mr Sossion urged members of the union to remain calm as they sort proper directions in due course.
The varied treatment in promotion and salary increment knocked on the door last year when TSC left around 103,634 teachers out of the scheme.
This resulted in an exodus of teachers from Knut to Kuppet between June and July this year with a central aim of enjoying the benefits.
