The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers, Secretary General James Torome has asked the Law Society of Kenya to keep away from the ongoing possible term renewal of the Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia.
According to Mr.Torome, who was accompanied by his colleagues in a meeting held at seasons Hotel Narok, the duty of the president was either to reappoint or dismiss Nancy Macharia as the Secretary and CEO of TSC.
Mr. Torome further said that the work of the Attorney General was only to notify the president of the vacant position.
He insisted that lawyers should always keep off teachers’ matters as they have never interfered with judicial matters.
KUSNET Chairman, Mr. Amos Mungai Karanja inquired why matters affecting teachers was everyone’s business yet teachers have never interfered with anyone’s business.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) wrote to the Attorney General, Justice Paul Kihara, warning him of the renewal of Ms. Macharia’s term as the CEO without subjecting the position to a process of competitive recruitment.
Dr. Nancy Macharia’s term ended recently amid uncertainty on whether it will be renewed for another five years or not.
Macharia’s term in office was characterized by strong-arm tactics especially in TSC dealings with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). It is during her term that KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion was deregistered as a teacher.
