Three students of Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School in Busia county are nursing injuries in a private hospital within the county after the septic tank they were standing on collapsed.
The school’s Deputy Principal Elizabeth Ngaji said the three girls were having lunch while standing on the ten metres deep septic tank.
“We heard students and non-teaching staff screaming and rushed to where they were. We joined hands and managed to get them out. They are currently in the hospital,” she said.
Busia County Deputy Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto hailed the teachers, students and non-teaching staff for their quick response.
“Their quick action saw the lives of the three girls saved. They are currently out of danger,” he added.
Ruto urged school managers across the county to inspect and get rid of infrastructure that pose a threat to human life.
“Students are bound to be injured when risk objects like live wires and poorly covered septic tanks are within the school compound.” He pointed out.
