Nyamira Commissioner decries rising mental health issues among area youth

Nyamira County Commissioner Michael Lesmam has decried the high rate of depression and mental health issues among the youth.

He attributed the matter to the general economic hardship that has plunged many families into depression.

While speaking at Nyangoso village where a school boy died on Thursday, the Commissioner appealed to the church and other community social workers to increase guidance and counseling services in order to curb the vice.

According to the boy’s mother Josephine Moindi, her son who schooled in Bomet County called home and asked for fare so that he could travel home to collect the NEMIS number that was needed at school.

The boy never reached home but his body was found hanging from a tree near a river in the area.

According to the boy’s mother, the body was discovered by an old woman who informed the family. Villagers informed the police who started investigation on the death.

“Our preliminary investigation showed that the boy committed suicide and more information shall be given out when investigations are complete,” said a police officer.

The officer also said that they found a piece of the deceased’s necktie hanging precariously from the branch while the other piece remained on his neck.

The body of the deceased was taken to Nyamira County hospital for postmortem.
