The Government is concerned by the way some parents take up their responsibilities especially in bringing up their children.
Mombasa Deputy County Commissioner Mahmoud Salim strongly accused a section of parents over what he termed as parental irresponsibility.
In a media briefing in Mombasa, the Deputy County Commissioner said some parents have failed to play their key role of nurturing their children to become responsible people.
He stated that the foundation of society is anchored on proper discipline and positive upbringing.
“Parents have very crucial responsibilities; to bring up morally upright children; the foundation should be strong enough. The technology world has taken over the children so parents have to be more careful in bringing them up,” he said.
The DCC further noted that parents have a responsibility to ensure that children stick to moral principles beneficial to the society.
He said the Government is committed to supporting all the stakeholders in bringing up a more disciplined young generation.
“I promise that we shall support you in everything you do. Most of the children today lack discipline which is crucial to the foundation of children,” the official added.
He called on Mombasa locals to remain vigilant and report any criminal incidences to the relevant authorities.
Salim further urged the society to embrace youth who recently surrendered and pleaded for public mercy.
“I want to tell all the residents to be on the lookout. We expect you to report any criminal tip to the authorities. Let us welcome the youth who begged for mercies the other day,” he said.
He called on the society to empower the reformed youths by providing them with the relevant skills available at technical and vocational training institutions.
On the other hand, Mombasa District Peace Committee Chairperson Feisal Bahero said leaders have a duty to ensure that youth stick to moral principles.
The chairperson noted that for peace to prevail the constitution must be upheld.
“Forgiveness only is not sufficient; what we want to see is the surrender of weapons used by these youths to the authorities if we are ready to do away with crime,” he said.
