About 300 teachers from Embu County failed to submit returns on their wealth status on time, a clear indicator of the laxity in adhereing to their employer’s policies.
This could also point to a large number of teachers countrywide who are yet to submit their financial status as required by law.
Mbeere South had the largest number at 104 followed by Mbeere North with 85 teachers who failed to observe the rules.
Embu East had 50 teachers while Embu North had 29 teachers who had not complied to the law. Embu West had the least number of teachers at 23 who failed to report on their financial status.
In a letter dated 2nd May, 2018, and copied to various County Directors, TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia noted that though majority of the teachers had filed their returns, a few were yet to do so.
“The Commission automated Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities (DIAL). All employees were expected to fill their 2015/2017 declaration online by 31st December, 2017.
Whereas a majority of employees complied, there are a few who are yet to declare,” stated TSC head in an internal memo.
Declaration of income, assets and liabilities, she noted, is a legal requirement and employees are expected to comply.
Following this development, teachers were required to make a late declaration by May this year.
The school heads will forward the names of those who do not comply to the TSC county directors.
Declaring wealth is in line with the Public Officer Ethics Act. The law requires every public officer to submit once every two years their income, assets and liabilities.
