- Magistrate Joy Mutimba has ruled that the sentence will run from Ngati’s remand date of October 9, 2025, while granting him 14 days to appeal.
- Social justice activists have welcomed the ruling, with the Jasiri project crediting its follow-up efforts for supporting the victim through to judgment.
A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Kwale court after he was found guilty of defiling a 13-year-old girl in Mandingo, Diani, Kwale County.
Kwale Magistrate Joy Mutimba sentenced Chamambo Mangale Ngati after finding sufficient evidence that he sexually assaulted the Grade Six minor on October 9 last year. The court heard evidence linking Ngati to the offence, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
“Keeping in mind the minimum mandatory supervision, the accused person is hereby sentenced to 20 years in prison,” Mutimba said. The judge further directed that the sentence shall commence from the day he was remanded on October 9, 2025. However, the court gave Ngati 14 days to appeal.
Social justice activists welcomed the ruling, saying it marked an important step in securing justice for the victim after the case went through the judicial process. Tuwajali Wajane founder and director Mwanasha Gaserego welcomed the judgment, describing it as a major step towards securing justice for survivors of gender-based violence.

Gaserego said the sentence was appropriate and should serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of sexual offences against children. “Through our Jasiri project, we have followed up on this case from the beginning to the judgment, and we welcome the outcome,” she said.
Kwale resident Loise Wanjiru also welcomed the ruling, saying the journey to justice had not been easy. She said the judgment had finally brought relief to the victim and her family after a long wait for justice.
