President William Ruto is expected to preside over this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebrations at the Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi on October 5, as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) rolls out a series of activities to honour teachers and promote their welfare.
The national celebrations will cap a five-day TSC Open Week running from September 27 to October 1, bringing together teachers, education stakeholders and members of the public in activities aimed at recognising the contribution of educators to the country.
The programme started on September 27 with the TSC Run, which was held simultaneously across the eight regional headquarters in Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Embu, Kakamega, Kisumu, Mombasa and Garissa.
The run featured 5km and 10km races and formed part of activities marking 60 years of the teaching profession.
On September 28, the Commission provided medical services as part of efforts to promote the health and well-being of teachers.

Today, September 29, the activities include recognition of awardees at the sub-county level alongside continued provision of medical services to teachers and members of the public.
The programme will continue on September 30 with tree-planting activities, with medical services also being offered as the Commission incorporates environmental conservation into the celebrations.
The week will conclude on October 1 with the TSC Open Day, allowing teachers, stakeholders and members of the public to interact with the Commission and learn more about its services and programmes.
The activities will culminate in the World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5 at the Kasarani Gymnasium, where outstanding teachers will be recognised for their contribution to teaching and learning.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” while Kenya’s local message is “Twawaenzi Walimu, Mashujaa Wetu.”
